Holiday sessions don’t always have to happen outdoors to feel special. In fact, some of the most meaningful ones happen right at home—like this extended family session that took place the day before Thanksgiving.

This gathering brought together grandparents, their adult children, and a group of very excited younger grandkids—including one family visiting from out of town. You could tell right away this wasn’t just another get-together. There was that extra level of energy that comes when everyone’s been waiting a while to be in the same place again—especially for the kids, who were more than ready to see their cousins.

The setting couldn’t have worked better. The grandparents’ home was warm, welcoming, and already decorated for the holidays. Between the Christmas tree and the fireplace, there was a natural backdrop that felt authentic—nothing staged, nothing overdone. It’s the kind of environment that makes people instantly more comfortable, which always shows in the photos.

And the kids really made the session. Lots of excitement, a little bit of chaos (the good kind), and plenty of genuine moments. They were clearly thrilled to be together, which meant the smiles didn’t need much encouragement. Those cousin interactions—laughing, leaning into each other, occasionally getting a little distracted—are the moments that end up mattering most.

The adults kept things relaxed, which helped everything flow. No one was overly stressed about perfection, and that made it easy to move through different groupings without it feeling like work. Grandparents with grandkids, full family shots, smaller family units—it all came together naturally.

And then there were the dogs—three of them, all adorable, and somehow incredibly cooperative. Getting one dog to sit still for a photo can be a challenge, so having three who were willing participants felt like a small miracle. They added an extra layer of personality to the session and, honestly, made a few of the photos even better. Kids and dogs together is always a winning combination.

Sessions like this are a great reminder that your home can be one of the best locations for photos, especially around the holidays. There’s a built-in comfort and familiarity that you just can’t recreate anywhere else. Plus, when you’re already gathered for something like Thanksgiving, it’s the perfect opportunity to document it.

These images are heading straight to Christmas cards this year, and they couldn’t be more fitting. Real smiles, a meaningful setting, and a family that clearly enjoys being together (dogs included)—it doesn’t get much better than that.

I had a great time being welcomed into their home and capturing these moments for them. Definitely one of those sessions that reminds you why in-home photography is worth doing.
